Web Development with PHP and MySQL

Time flies when you're having fun ... my first exposure to computers came in a 1967 high school programming class on the IBM punched card reader (which was obsolete before the class was completed). My first computer programming project was completed using a Texas Instruments TI-99/4A back in about 1980, using an attached cassette tape player to store the program. I've sworn by (or at) dozens of computers since those days, working currently with a new quad core AMD 955 desktop PC, while keeping an Asus netbook in reserve as an emergency backup and travel companion.

In 2001, I began developing small database driven web applications for web designers and the general public, providing Linux / cPanel® web hosting, and working extensively with PHP scripting and MySQL™ database. Related skills include HTML, CSS, basic Javascript and AJAX, web graphics, search engine optimization, and installation and configuration of popular Open Source applications.

Development included the custom web content management system (CMS) used for this site and also for numerous client websites where various custom forms were developed to process user input, insert data into a MySQL™ database, and optionally e-mail the data to the appropriate people. Website creation includes ETNews.org with 500+ pages of content, Rattlesnake Fire Rescue, NAAA.ORG, LERC.ORG, brokenfax.com, and coloradoalarm.net. After co-authoring phpMyEdit documentation several years ago, I created a PHP Form Generator for web developers and successfully marketed the project to developers in 30 different countries. The number of web pages that can be implemented using my CMS is almost unlimited. For example, http://www.etnews.org/ is approaching 600 pages of content. Literally thousands of pages could be published, grouped by category and/or sub-category (subject to the aesthetics of navigation links appearing at the side of the page). Side navigation links are generated on-the-fly based on active content found in the currently selected topic or category. New web pages are automatically added to navigation links. Each web page in the CMS database has numberous properties. Pages can be flagged as Hidden while content is under development. Pages can be optionally configured to draw their content from separate programming scripts which access data residing in various database tables, for example displaying reports or displaying a searchable list of products.

This CMS includes user registration and login features. New registrants must complete a registration form which generates an email message to the registrant. The registration message contains an assigned password and a link which the registrant must click in order to activate their registration. This is done in order to ensure a valid email address entered on the registration. After a new user activates their profile, they can log in using the assigned password. Users can change the assigned password after logging in for the first time. Users who forget their user name or password can use built-in forms to retrieve their information via email. Lost passwords can be reset, but not recovered.

Dozens of additional features are configurable within my CMS, which is currently deployed on almost 100 websites.

Recently I posted an ad for some help on our Fire Department website and Doug Hockinson replied. Now we are a small volunteer department but like any other Fire Department we take our jobs very seriously.

Its one thing to have a website it is another to have it show up on a search engine. Mine consistently shows up on the first few listing without paying extra for clicks.
